Why we have the California Building Code
On March 10, 1933, a magnitude 6.3 earthquake hit Long Beach,
California. According to the Department of General Services
(department), that earthquake destroyed 70 schools and inflicted
major structural damage on another 120.

Calculating Allowable Area
I came across this website. It can help you to see if you have a viable basis for adding area to a project under the IBC. Please note that it will not work 100% for the California Building Code because it does not have the amendments built into it. However it is a good starting point.
